Ask businesses similar (but not competitive) to yours for their customer list. For example, if you are selling make-up, don’t ask a Mary Kay rep for her list. But ask a beauty parlor, pharmacy, dress shop, etc for their customer list. Maybe even trade them some product or service for their list. Now you have some legitimate prospects!

Residential “Occupant” lists can be purchased very inexpensively from.

If you have a professional printer or addressing service print and address your mail, you can get the occupant postage down to 18 cents ( sometimes 14 cents). They usually charge a few cents a piece for this service but it still saves you a ton…the reason is…

If you apply the addresses yourself and put them in zip code order…the post office will only reduce your postage to about 30-34 cents.

A professional service sequences the addresses into delivery order..and thus you get a much bigger discount. You cannot do that on your own because you need the barcoding and other endorsement coding built into the address.

a good resource for effective direct mail is

It is best to create your mail campaign with an incentive of some sort in mind….people respond much better to that approach than just “awareness” advertising.

You want your mail to create a response…not to make the entire sale…that is your job, face to face, or let your mail drive curiosity to your website where you have more room to “educate” your customer.

Always ask those that respond what it was specifically about your mailer that hooked them….that is valuable information which will help you improve your direct mail skills.

Good Luck

Stephanie, If you are doing a small mailing, you can do it yourself–like 200 to 1000 postcards.  If you are doing more than that, you might want to get some help.
You get postage rates for example if you have you list processed.  Also keep in mind if the postcard is professionally designed, it will make a better impact you the person you sending it to.  There are many factors though that you can waste a lot of time on trying to learn….like how to get the right list, proper design, postage rates, etc.  Check out this article below for further info…
