I opened my yahoo mail and in the spam folder was an advertisement using my email address for challis. How can this happen and how can I stop it from happening again.

You can’t stop it, the spammers have a way of getting our email addresses. Just be sure you Don’t mark it spam. You will be spamming your own address, just delete it. I’ve had a few of those, it gives my heart a jump.
The spammers have simple ways to make it look like the mail came from your address. Of course it did not. Just a trick.
