I’m currently employed at very large interactive media company hoping to embark on a career in marketing/advertising. Unfortunately, I’m in Support Operations located in a different different building, in a different city. Therefore, it’s difficult to properly network and move up within the company.

So I guess my question is… Would it be appropriate to use the company address book and email those in the marketing/advertising department and inquire about open positions? What about phone calls to corporate recruiters?

I’m not sure about your company but a lot post job opening within the company first. I would talk to your HR department first and let them know you’re interested in moving up.
That and as much as I **** to say it, being a ‘company man’, does help…not totally kissing ass, but a company man.

i’d be really careful about that. It’s really doubtful that your company would be willing to pay a recruiter to find them someone already in their company. Emailing marketing is also potentially deadly. It will get back to your bosses. That’s probably not a good idea.

Does your company post internal vacancies? If so, once you have some time in your present position, start applying. If not, again, once you have some time in, ask around about how the company fills internal positions.

Good luck and please, be careful.

To answer your question, no it is not appropriate to use the company address book and email those in the marketing/advertising department and inquire about open positions, but you may use it to email your HR Department and inquire about open positions. They are the one responsible for hiring and recruiting new employees as open positions and vacancy are all fowarded in this department. Phone call to corporate recruiters is a good idea if your company’s recruitment requirement is not outsourced by your company. If it is outsourced then it is a bad idea. Your best bet is still your HR Department.
