Working for a up and starting company trying to recruit companies to advertise on the page. Can someone give me some tips on how to approach companies or what kind of letter or email I should be sending out?

Depends on your traffic…
If you have traffic and your audience is the right metric for a given product or service then it will be a little easier.

However, I suspect that since the company is new, that traffic is lacking. So, you are likely going to have to make some really good deals where the advertiser is willing to take a risk upfront for long term pay-off.

Offer a really low introductory ad package and throw a long-term commitment into it. This gives them a great deal and you a long term advertiser. However, you are really going to have to convince them that the traffic will be there.

So the first step is to really do a serious gut check on your traffic acquisition plans. Is the traffic going to be there? Long gone are the days of “If I build it, they will come.”

PS… never send out unsolicited email to companies asking them to advertise on your site.

For an unknown site with no traffic, you are better off using existing banner ad networks or contextual advertising networks.

1. Join an advertising network. Advertising networks are organizations that aggregate Web sites that offer advertising space, and sell banner ads (and other advertising options) across them. Traffic requirement is often a minimum of 5,000 monthly impressions, although many do not accept sites hosted by free page services.

Burst Media
Fastclick (ValueClick).
Advertising.com.
Tribal Fusion

2. Participate in contextual advertising networks. Contextual advertising are text ads delivered based on the content of the web page using an automated system.

Google Adsense
Yahoo! Publishing Network (currently in beta and available to US publishers only)
Intellixt
Quigo Adsonar
IndustryBrains
Commission Junction Evolution
Kanoodle Brightads
Clicksor
Contextweb
Bidclix
Bidvertiser

3. Sell advertising for your site directly. This is admittedly a more difficult route for a small business site wanting to earn advertising revenues. But hey, as they say: “no pain, no gain!”

Your challenge will be to prove to advertisers that you can give them decent returns on their investment. They will ask for your traffic numbers and details on the type of audiences you attract. They will ask how they will track the performance of their campaign so you must have an ad server. Build your site first, and get traffic.

Once you have traffic, then you can start selling ads on your site.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
