I keep on getting unwanted emails after somebody has started using my email address to advertise ****. Is there any phone number that I can call to report this? And even better, is what this “porn seller” is doing illegal in the United States? If so can I then call the police?

sending spams is not illegal, there is really nothing you can do about it, except set ur spam filter to high and block the spammers address.

Block them! Just click by the email, and then click the “Spam” button.. or the equivlant on your system.. That’ll be the end of it!

The local police won’t give a damn. You could try filing a complaint with the FTC, but to be perfectly honest, they will probably not be interested in your problems either.

Great question but unfortunately what you are getting is purely spam and quite a lot by the sounds of it. having someone use your email address will definitely contribute to the issue but no matter what you do you will not be able to stop it. Sure, the big names like Yahoo and hotmail allows you to block email addresses as they appreciate how annoying and how widespread the issue is but you can’t block it all. Fraud is another issue on the email side, particularly from Africa and every year billions are lost by innocent people giving other people their personal details and this is a real Shame. I strongly believe not enough is being done to stop this and track people causing these illegal emails going out as a lot of people believe stuff or use links to fake sites.

In some countries, mainly Scandinavian, you can actually sue the email spammer and the fine is quite hefty and can be up to a few thousand but many people don’t bother as you need to track them 1st. Not sure about the US though although I doubt it. Everyone in the US is so obessed with the idea of making money by any means so it is imposible and everyone is joining the spamming club. Calling the police will not result in anything being done either. They are aware that spam exists and that it is an issue. Unfortunately all their authorities will get involved in these days is illegal stuff and spam really isn’t illegal. It is simply bloody annoying and form of advertising and that’s why programs exist to get rid of spyware. If you visits some sites they create small text files called coookies on your pC and a lot of these are used to track what you do and display a popup for instance. Phising however is serious and groups are set up to monitor them and track. Companies like Paypal for instance are great as they have a report link so you can report fake sites as they know these people that create the fake site to make money from others is a serious issue. They will investigate the email for you and will tell you if it is fake and then notify others. What exactly is done after that I believe is not a lot. I do not believe they go after the culprits unfortunately although as I work in IT I did read an artcle that they have systems in place now to track spam more towards illegal emails liked to money laundering etc. Spam is not such an issue. Phising and money laundering is on the increase in the UK and is a massive problem and is on the increase.

My advice, create a new email account and kick the person that sent the **** advertising out. They must be either very young of very stupid. Once you start notifying others of your email you are really in the **** on the web, even if you register an account on a site. A of companies however promise to not forward your emails details as a lot of companies are prepared to pay a lot of money for these details. However, many programs exist to send spam to random emails so there is no escape really. In your situation I think we can say “you’re out of luck”

SPAM is illegal if it violates the CAN-SPAM ACT

However, you have not provided any evidence that you have been hacked, that you are being spammed by the person who hacked you, etc…

If you suspect that you have had your account hacked… then you should report the abuse to your email provider and ensure that the account has been cleansed (ie, passwords changed, completely logged out, no forwarding or secondary emails added, and the offender tracked via event logs).

If you are receiving spam then the proper thing to do is to a) forward the spam to the authorities with the full header information available and b) to any ISPs that may be concerned and to c) filter the email so that you are not bothered anymore or d) attempt to prosecute or sue in civil court the person(s) responsible.

You can forward the header information to which is the Federal Trade Commission email address. They deal with SPAM, ABUSE, FRAUD, INTERNET SCAMS, etc…

You can also read the header information and attempt to perform a WHOIS lookup on the IP addresses you find (ie, x-originating-ip ad received IPs and any within the body of the email) and then forward also to the ABUSE department of those ISPs.

You could also perform a traceroute to see what routers and servers the mail travels through and alert them as well.

If you have enough evidence to support a criminal prosecution then you should insist that your local D.A. (district attorney) subpoena the logs of the ISPs involved so that they can track down the actual user.

Good Luck
