I was just wondering if it would be illegal to email people that you don’t know advertising merchandise.

In some places it is. It’s spam. Spam is bad. Don’t do spam. inboxes will thank you.

That is considered SPAM. Legallity depends on the content. It could/would, if reported enough and severe enough, cause your account(s) to be permanently suspended.
