Your mention of a portfolio denotes an interest in a career as a model or model/spokesperson. It is my understanding from watching such programs as “America’s Next Top Model”, a Tyra Bank’s production, that one should obtain an agent to represent their interests to people with whom they are in contact with on a regular, professional basis.

Of course, if you are selected to go on an interview, they will want for you to have more than just photographs in a portfolio. A complete biography and work history may also be needed. Get someone to type it up or create one for yourself. You will need business cards and possibly a business license. It may be helpful to begin to associate ‘what you do’ with anyother business venture. You need to be able to show your willingness to ‘go beyond’ others in the industry. Your portfolio should be blessed with photographs that are conservative yet creative; non-pornographic yet revealing; and daring yet not crazy. You should not look as though you are hurting yourself or anyone else in your photos.

Have you ever gone cold canvassing or followed an agent for a newspaper or magazine to see whom they are contacting for advertisements? Have you ever applied for a position with a newspaper or magazine as an advertisement salesperson? A basic press kit and a few simple calculation techniques could place you in a position in which you could ‘work yourself’ into the advertisements. It would require a digital camera and a tripod to get started along with working ‘with’ or ‘for’ smaller companies. However, it could be one way to ‘grow’ your experience and portfolio in modeling.

Have you tried their website? These agencies you mentioned have offices all over the world, not just NY. I would be surprised if there isn’t a contact in for for job opportunities in their website. Also you might want to make a call. Their operator will give you a number for the person that hires in human resources.

There’s no passive way to get the info you want. You could try looking on their websites, but the easiest way is just pick up the phone and call. Ask the receptionist who the creative director is and if a portfolio review can be arranged. Many of the agencies are always open to seeing the work of new talent. I’m guessing you’re a graphic designer because that’s what agencies do. With the advent of the Internet, many of the CDs will ask if they can see your work online, so it’s best to get your work in a digital format where it can be quickly reviewed. Once they see your work online, they will ask you in for an interview. The really big agencies are going to want someone with experience so unless you have some with a smaller agency, you might be wasting your time.
