When a website sells advertisement spaces, it is possible that not all the spaces will be bought. In order to not show a gap in the website, a generic ad can be shown. How can this “generic ad” be called?

It is often called a ‘filler’ and is handled in various ways. Google Ads, for example, will show a public service announcement or an ad that you pre-designate if you have your own. I usually let the public service ads run, although I also have ads for my other websites run on some of the fillers.
You can also have ‘white space’ where nothing is shown at all.

REMNANT ADVERTISING is the leftover or unsold inventory you have

The generic ad you show to fill up the rest is typically called default campaign.

Remnant space. Excess Inventory. Extra Ad Space. Filler.

It’s all the same and usually a great deal:)
